Chapter 4: Completing the Accounting Cycle

Using Spreadsheet Software Programs for Accounting Work Sheets

Instructions: Use the following computer periodical web sites to locate a recent article about spreadsheet software programs. Write a short summary about the article. A linked web site is summarized below as an example.

Computer Periodical Web Sites:
Microsoft Excel 2002 (CNET–April 24, 2001)

Excel 2002 is just a slightly scrubbed-up version of Excel 2000. It doesn't offer many improvements, but Excel is the best spreadsheet going, especially compared to Corel's out-of-date Quattro Pro 10. For those routinely collaborating on spreadsheets, Excel's simplified yet powerful collaboration features allow colleagues to share and edit spreadsheets via the Web or email. At-home users needn't bother upgrading; the $109 upgrade fee is too steep.

Extended Research Activities

1. Instructions: Search ZDNET to compare spreadsheet software programs that are available on the market today. Include your answers to the questions below in a short report.
  • Which spreadsheet software programs would be suitable for a small business?
  • What are the minimum system requirements and price ranges for these spreadsheet software programs?
  • Based on the information you find, which program do you think you would be likely to purchase for constructing accounting work sheets? Why?

2. Instructions: Use the SEC Home Page and the EDGAR Search site to help you search for a particular company's financial statements filed within the past year. Include your answers to the following questions in a short report.
  • Which forms are used to report a company's quarterly and annual reports?
  • Does the information included in a quarterly report differ from that in an annual report? If so, state the differences.
  • Note the reporting period of the statements filed and compare this date to the filing date.

Either print out your answers for submission or email them to your instructor.
